Today officially kicks off the world’s largest electronics trade show, Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas and we are feeling ALL the excitement and innovation right here in Dayton. Since keeping up with all the current trends in home technology has always been a Coldwell Banker agent’s m.o., this year marks the third year that Coldwell Banker sponsors the Smart Home Showcase. After checking out some of the coolest products to hit the floor at this year’s CES, and reading up on Coldwell Banker’s annual Smart Home Marketplace Survey, we decided to make our own predictions on what smart home trends will look like in 2018.
Check out the list below of home technology trends we just KNOW you’re going to see this year:
1. The Smart Bathroom
You may already be familiar with the concept of the connected bathroom, but there is no doubt that 2018 has taken this experience to a new level. Kohler showcased a new line of products, centered around the Verdera Lighted Mirror that brings Amazon Alexa voice command to control the illumination of the room (think softer lighting while brushing teeth and brighter lighting for applying makeup). In addition, Moen’s new shower technology uses voice command to turn on the water and select the temperature. While in 2017 many viewed the bathroom as a place to escape from technology, in 2018 we predict that more and more will be using these smart bathroom devices to find a new level of relaxation.
2. The Death of Cable
Each year it seems like we get closer and closer to severing our relationship with cable and satellite providers FOREVER. And while I don’t assume that all entertainment will be streamed in 2018, I think it’s a fair prediction that in this next year more Over the Air solutions will arise, leaving us all the ability to cut the cable cord for good. Check out the launch of AirTV, which allows users to integrate local channels with their favorite streamed content FOR FREE.
3. Voice Command Everything
As Apple, Amazon, and Google continue to battle it out for the crown of Smart Home Central Hub, the safest bet you can make regarding smart home trends is that a simple app no longer cuts it-everything will need to work at the sound of your voice and honestly, we wouldn’t have it any other way! Why open my phone when I can just ask Alexa?
4. Amped-Up Security for the Devices that are “Always On”
As smart home technology becomes the new norm, many homeowners don’t realize just how many devices they have connected to their home network. And while cyber-security has made a name for itself in the past year, there is still a lack of attention from consumers towards protection for devices that are always on (the Nest Thermostat, for example). In 2018, we look forward to more manufacturers developing products driven specifically towards protecting smart home devices from hacking. If you want to know more about how you can keep your smart home safe from cyber-crime now, check out our blog about it: here.
